Memorial Day

Joe Calley was a decorated WWII hero. Every year he marched in the Memorial Day parade in his hometown of Downers Grove, Iowa. The parade led to the town’s cemetery where Joe would say a prayer honoring the war dead and then retreat to a dark room in the back of his house. Blinds drawn and door shut, he would spend the rest of the day in seclusion.

Benjamin Calley had been estranged from his father, Joe, ever since his day in college. Now living in Chicago, Ben cannot get past the haunting memory of his father marching in the parade and closing himself off from the world. Ben decides this Memorial Day will be different. He determines he will get past the door of seclusion and find out the answer to the mystery of Memorial Day. Yet, Ben is not prepared for what he will find on the other side of that door.

Our Rotary Club thoroughly enjoyed hearing from Kevin as our speaker at a recent club meeting.  We have many educators and history buffs in our club, and his presentation was engaging and well researched.  He presented in a way that was interactive and made the topic of the Civil War as it pertained to Indiana's involvement very interesting .
It was great to hear how that important time in history related to our local community!  I would recommend his presentation to any group, young or old!
Carrie Dixon

President-Elect and Acting Secretary, Noblesville Rotary Club

The storyline was captivating. The back and forth and following up with each of the main characters was well done. I have been to the 22 major battlefields of the Civil War. All the back and forth in Virginia, the trip to Andersonville brings back many fond memories of my trips there.
